MACON, Ga. — Another person has thrown their hat in the ring for Bibb County Sheriff.
Ron Rodgers will officially announce his candidacy on Wednesday during an event at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in an event that starts at 5 p.m.
Rodgers is a family man and has deep roots in the community, his campaign news release says.
He has been in law enforcement for 30 years and "understands that the growth, safety, and productivity of every neighborhood in the Macon-Bibb community is crucial to economic development and the lives of each and every citizen."
Rodgers's law enforcement background includes roles as a military police commander, patrol and traffic officer, narcotics and violent crimes investigator, training officer, holding facility and transportation supervisor, campus police criminal investigation commander, chief of police, and high school and college law enforcement instructor.
His news release does not go into his background in detail, but his LinkedIn profile says he is a former Centerville police chief, a Bibb County schools campus police captain, a Fort Valley State investigator and a former Macon police investigator.
Rodgers is currently director at Southwest Academy Magnet High School and Law Academy.
He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Fort Valley State University and a master's degree in public safety and administration from the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College at Columbus State University.
Rodgers says he "will unify efforts to grow and sustain safe communities for children, families, and businesses by building relationships across Macon-Bibb County and fostering trust and understanding between law enforcement and residents."
He is committed to hiring, training and retaining officers to ensure prompt response times and enhance police coverage, the release says. He also plans to establish a solid and visible police presence, and work with other government officials to secure better law enforcement facilities, forge partnerships to address mental illness and "consistently recognize the men and women on the front line every day who protect our county."
Rodgers says he "will continue to collaborate with parents, schools, the faith-based community, businesses, community organizations, and the justice system to reduce youth violence and provide youth with valuable mentorship, career, and workforce development opportunities."
He says his unwavering dedication to public service drives his campaign, and with his extensive experience and steadfast commitment, he will lead the Macon-Bibb County Sheriff's Office toward a safer and more secure future.
He is the fifth person to announce their candidacy for Bibb County Sheriff.
Sheriff David Davis is running for re-election. Rodgers joins challengers DeAndre Hal, Christopher Paul and Marshall Hughes.
Party primaries are set for May. The general election is in November.
