MACON, Ga. — Rutland Middle school had a controlled dismissal today with additional safety measures after a suspect got loose in the wooded area across from the school.
Sheriff Terry Deese said Bibb deputies are assisting Byron PD track down the suspect after he got loose while Byron officers were arresting him.
A release made to parents and families around Rutland complex by Stephanie Hartley said that some kids were released late for safety reasons, and some buses may be late.
The full statement reads as follows:
"Good afternoon. This message is for the Rutland Complex. Numerous law enforcement cars are on scene while Bibb County Sheriff’s Office assists Peach County Sheriff's deputies searching for a suspect in the wooded area across from the school complex. Rutland Middle School dismissal is occurring with additional safety measures through a controlled dismissal process. Officers are on scene to assist. Some buses may be late, and some students will be dismissed late to keep everyone secure. The safety of our students and staff is a top priority and we appreciate your understanding."
Byron Police Chief Wesley Cannon says his officers were investigating the suspect for a theft of lottery tickets from a convenience store. Byron PD found out he was living at the Motel 6 on Hartley Bridge road and went there to cite him. That’s when Cannon says he took off running and wound up somewhere on the east side of I-75. They’re still looking. “There will likely be some warrants now,” he remarked.
Cannon says they’ve spotted him in the woods a couple of times, but they just haven’t gotten him yet. “Knowing my guys, it’ll be pretty soon,” he said.
