'I think I would want someone to donate to me': Springdale Elementary students give back to community during Season of Giving event

A Macon school showed their students the power of giving not just for a day or a week, but throughout November.

MACON, Ga. — It's the holiday season. Many people across the world may find themselves being more generous during this time and students at Springdale Elementary School are no different.

Through Springdale's Season of Giving event students, like Cyler Fleming, are learning about the importance of giving and about charitable organizations across Central Georgia.

"Sometimes we have too much. If we donate to people that don't have enough they can feel the same way as us," Fleming said.

Principal Cami Hamlin says different organizations are chosen for each grade level.

Hamlin says throughout November students and staff collected supplies for different groups including: Crisis Line and Safe House of Central Georgia, The Ronald McDonald House, Methodist Church Children's Home, Daybreak, Loaves and Fishes, Macon-Bibb Literary Alliance, Atrium Health Navicent Beverly Knight Olson Children's Hospital, and All About Animals Rescue.

"Unfortunately many of our kids are living in some of these circumstances that these organizations (provide for). This teaches them what the organizations provide and where you can go when in need," Hamlin said.

The school also put up a giving tree for some students whose families may need extra support during the holidays.

"It's basically a tree that has tags on it. It might say he wants shirts, or toiletry items," Hamlin said.

Kids will share what they learned from the event at their leadership day December 1. They will also begin distributing items.

"When I think about it in my shoes. I think I would want someone to donate to me," Fleming said.
