Telfair State Prison warden stabbed by inmate, according to Georgia Department of Corrections

It happened on Wednesday morning during a shakedown inside one of the dorms.

TELFAIR COUNTY, Ga. — The Telfair State Prison warden was treated for injuries after being by an inmate, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

It happened at around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday when staff members were performing a shakedown for contraband in a dorm inside the prison.

One of the inmates assaulted the Warden Andrew McFarlane with a homemade weapon. McFarlane was treated for his wounds and is expected to be okay.

During this time staff members released less-lethal munitions to get inmates to listen to commands.

Telfair State Prison remains on lockdown. There were no additional injures to staff or inmates. There was minimal damage within the dorm to the televisions.

McFarlane has been on the job for less than a year. He was named the warden back in June 2023 and started on July 1, 2023.

McFarlane began his career with the Department in 1997 as a Correctional Officer at Smith State Prison. During his tenure, he served as Sergeant of the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT), Lieutenant, Lead Shift Supervisor, Captain, and Unit Manager.

In 2016, he was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Rogers State Prison, and in 2019 he was reassigned to Deputy Warden of Security at Smith State Prison.

McFarlane served in the United States Marine Corps from 1989-1993 and served in the United States Army from 1994-1997.
