'This family has been through a lot:' Tragedy strikes Macon family twice in less than two weeks

Ellen Sandifer and Leonard Spivey, a grandmother and her grandson, were killed less than weeks apart

A Macon teen is in jail on murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing another teen Monday at a west Macon Chick-fil-A.

18-year-old Julian Charles Kongquee has been charged with murder in the death of Leonard Spivey Jr.

Family members tell WMAZ that Spivey was a teen with aspirations of going to college.

Sadly, he isn’t the only person who has been taken from this family by violence.

“Little Leonard was a good kid,” said Cynthia Murphy.

Murphy has known Spivey since he was little, but on Monday he was taken from his family at a place known for its family values.

“As long as I’ve known him, I’ve never known him to get in trouble,” she said.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says Leonard was in a fight involving several people outside the restaurant on Bloomfield Road.

He was trying to get away and ducked inside the restaurant when an employee stepped out.

“One of the people followed him and was armed with a firearm, and followed him into the store and shot him,” said Sheriff David Davis.

Spivey’s death is the second tragedy to strike his family in just a couple weeks.

On August 22, his grandmother Ellen Sandifer was found dead with blunt force trauma to the head.

The back-to-back deaths are weighing on the family.

“This family has been through a lot. With these two homicides and their mom just passed last year. It’s rough for them, period,” said Murphy.

18-year-old Julian Charles Kongquee was arrested and charged with murder in Leonard's death.

He actually contacted authorities about an injury to his elbow that he said he got at the Chick-Fil-A, which lead to his questioning and subsequent arrest.

“Stop the killing because it’s not worth it. You take someone’s life; your life is over already anyway. Your conscience is going to eat you up,” said Murphy.

The homicide adds to the growing total in Macon, which is about to pass 2017’s total of 30, with four months left in 2018.

Sheriff David Davis described the shooting as shocking and says it’s something we’re seeing time and time again.

The sheriff’s office says neither Kongquee or Spivey worked at the Chick-fil-A and that no one else was hurt.

Kongquee is being held without bond.
