VERIFY: How many 2018 homicides are unsolved in Macon-Bibb?

Macon Bibb has seen 27 homicides since January 1st, but how many remain unsolved?

After nearly three dozen homicides so far in Bibb County this year, a viewer emailed 13WMAZ asking us to verify how many cases are unsolved.

Chelsea Beimfohr also spoke to a mother whose daughter was shot and killed in Macon in 2012 while playing videogames in their house. She's still searching for answers 6 years later.

In June of 2012, someone shot Shar'Bora Daniels in the head. Her stepmother, Lori Daniels, is frustrated with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

"I don't care who got shot yesterday. Shy is just as important to me as whoever got shot yesterday was to their people," says Daniels. "I just feel like they're not doing anything because it's a cold case, but they let it get cold."

Daniels says she's given investigators tips, but claims they haven't followed up.

"I had one of them tell me they're so busy, they only have 8 people down there working," says Daniels.

Sgt. Joseph Vamper and Sgt. Dallas Malone say they are 2 of 8 Macon-Bibb homicide investigators.

"We have to make sure that it is solid information, make sure that we can prove it. We can't just go based off of just one person's word. We need to be able to prove and research what they give us," says Malone.

According to the pair, there's been 141 homicides in Macon-Bibb since the city and county consolidated at the start of 2014. They say 118 of them are solved and 23 are left to iron out. This means each investigator is working nearly 3 cases each.

"I mean, we can't do this alone. I mean, we need the support of the communities and the people to come forward to bring us information," says Vamper.

So far in 2018, there have been 27 homicides in Macon-Bibb, Vamper verifies that 10 remain unsolved, but Malone says they're "working around the clock" to bring families closure.

"We're just making do with what we have. My squad was working day shift. We were supposed to get off at 5 p.m. We got off at 2:00 yesterday morning. We were back at 9:00 this morning. This is all working on the murders," says Malone.
