Meet the Macon Bacon's #1 fan

The 11-year-old is enthusiastic when he chats about baseball and Macon

It's fun to watch the players out on Luther Williams Field, but a baseball team isn't much without you rooting in the stands.

But, there can only be one top fan. It's a big honor and we let the Macon Bacon make the call. Meet 11-year-old Will Booker.

He's 78 pounds of Bacon-bursting energy. Bacon president Brandon Raphael says it was an easy decision.

"There are going to be some folks that are watching saying, 'Wait a minute I'm your number one fan,' and we can have a thousand number one fans but there was no hesitation in our mind whatsoever when the opportunity came up to say he [Will Booker] is obviously our number one fan," he said.

Raphael says the club has a lot of respect for the kid.

"He's well beyond his years," he said with a smile.

Let's run down the stats. The 7th grader is a great ambassador for the team.

"They bring a lot of people from out of town and middle Georgia and it's a great opportunity to embrace all of these people that come in. They're like, 'Hey if this is in Macon there has to be some other cool stuff in Macon,' and there is," Booker said.

And he's got the look down too.

"I saved up to buy the hat. I had a little bit of money from earlier because I got it for getting out of the fifth grade and I was like 'Oh what do I want to get?' and I was like, 'Oh I will buy a hat from the Macon Bacon,"' Booker explained.

And he knows the players.

"Be looking out for Cal Gentry, he came back from last year. He's from Cal State. Fullerton? He plays short stop and outfield," Booker said.

He may also have a leg up on the competition.

"Well, being a bat boy, you get to know all the players and everybody knows you down in the dugout," Booker said.

"The reason he's a bat boy is because he's our number one fan. We only have a couple of opportunities for bat boys, but that derived out of his fanship and his family that comes to the games," Raphael said.

Being a Bacon booster comes with some perks.

"I spend every pre-game here talking to the players and just having fun in here," Booker said.

"We talk about baseball, we talk about what we do for fun during the summer, we talk about school and things like that," Raphael said.

Will knows he's got competition in the stands and that someone could swipe his title, but he seems okay with it.

"I think it's cool we have the Macon Bacon because it's a cool opportunity for people to come out, watch some baseball, have fun and there's so much energy in the stadium. Nobody's ever going to go home sad if we lose because everyone is just happy to watch some baseball," he said.

Will figures he can do bat boy duties for a couple more years and eventually he would love to play for the Bacon.
