Nate McMillan and the Indiana Pacers are finalizing a deal that will make McMillan the next coach of the Pacers, a person familiar with negotiations told USA TODAY Sports.

The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly until the deal is official.

McMillan, who coached the Seattle SuperSonics and Portland Trail Blazers to a 478-452 record in 12 seasons, has been an assistant with the Pacers for the past three seasons for Frank Vogel, who was not retained after the Pacers lost to the Toronto Raptors in the first round.

Yahoo Sports first reported news of the deal.

This is an interesting hire for Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird, who told The Indianapolis Star two days ago that his coaching search hadn't started. It came together quickly for the two sides.

McMillan is known as a defensive coach. However, he has had top-five offenses — that haven't always played at the pace Bird wants the Pacers to play.
