BALTIMORE — As efforts continue to clear the channel and recover victims of the Baltimore bridge collapse, fundraisers have been started for the families of the victims.
On Tuesday, March 26, a cargo ship carrying hazardous materials crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, claiming the lives of six construction workers.
The victims are 34-year-old Maynor Suazo Sandoval, of Honduras, 40-year-old Miguel Luna, of El Salvador, 35-year-old Alejandro H. Fuentes, of Mexico, 26-year-old Dorlian Cabrera and Jose Lopez, of Guatemala.
Members of the community, people close to the families, and employers each came together to create GoFundMe’s for those directly impacted by this tragic collapse.
Maynor Suazo’s son, David, partnered with his employer to create a GoFundMe for his father. David described his dad as “the engine of the family, never stopping.” Maynor was described as a hard working man, who according to his son, never worked just one job. Maynor left behind a wife, three daughters, and a son.
Jose Lopez’s wife, Isabel Franco, asked for donations to help her cover weekly expenses, monthly bills, and any other unexpected necessities. Franco says the Key Bridge disaster took away not just a life, but the stability and security her family once knew. Lopez's sudden absence has left a void that cannot be filled emotionally or financially.
Franco’s $25,000 goal has reached $44,000. Lopez leaves behind three children and a wife.
