GHSA disputes Chastain's explanation of controversial play in 5A championship game

According to GHSA executive director Robin Hines, there was no misapplication of the rule.

The executive director of the Georgia High School Association has spoken out in the controversy regarding an alleged miscommunication during the 5A State Championship involving Warner Robins head Coach Mike Chastain and an official.

Coach Chastain says that during the second overtime of the game after a roughing the kicker penalty was assessed, he was only given the option of keeping the points or taking the yardage and repeating fourth down from an official but did not receive the option of an automatic first down and distance.

13WMAZ talked with GHSA Executive Director Robin Hines, who also was in attendance at the game, who says he sees things differently.

According to Hines, there was no misapplication of the rule. He alleges that the referee communicated to the head linesman who then did indeed offer Coach Mike Chastain a first down and distance or to keep the points, which he claims was overheard by two independent evaluators on the sideline, including one who is an official training director and the other a rules interpreter within the GHSA.

Hines says there is no cause for protest and this case is officially closed.
