ATLANTA — Atlanta Braves All-Star Spencer Strider will miss the rest of the 2024 season after undergoing elbow surgery, the team announced Saturday morning.
Strider left the game against Arizona with elbow discomfort on April 5 and the team subsequently said an MRI revealed "damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow."
On Saturday the Braves said Strider had undergone surgery performed by Dr. Keith Meister to repair the UCL.
"RHP Spencer Strider yesterday underwent surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow with internal brace, performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, TX. He will miss the remainder of the 2024 season," the Braves posted on X.
After Strider's injury, it seemed a strong possibility he would require season-ending surgery. Braves manager Brian Snitker said earlier this week that he was optimistic that Strider would "get whatever it is fixed and come back and continue to have a really good career."
"You hate that, you hate it for him, you know, feel really bad for him," Snitker said. "He's a kid that does everything right and loves to compete and just the whole everything."
Strider made two starts this season, throwing nine innings before the injury.
Last year, in making the All-Star team, Strider won 20 games with a 3.86 ERA and a league-leading 281 strikeouts in 186 2/3 innings. He went 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 131 2/3 innings in 2022.
