'The purpose of a roundabout is to reduce crashes': BSO sergeant's advice on navigating a roundabout

The most important point to keep in mind when driving through a roundabout is to yield to traffic in the roundabout.

MACON, Ga. — Passing a driver's test may get you the license, but not everybody knows traffic laws or how to drive sometimes.

Some people are driving into issues at roundabouts, according to the Traffic Division at the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

"The purpose of a roundabout is to reduce crashes; that's the number one reason," Sgt. Donald Johnson said. "It also, in turn, slows down traffic."

That's why you don't see stop signs or traffic lights at roundabouts; instead, you'll see signs for the roundabout, pedestrians and yielding to traffic.

Those signs, Johnson said, indicate that you're supposed to slow down as you approach roundabouts.

Sometimes, not everyone does that.

"People will take the chance on running a red light or try to go through a yellow light when you should yield or come to a stop," Johnson elaborated.

That's what caused an accident a couple of weeks ago, according to the traffic sergeant.

So pay attention, stay in your lane, proceed with caution and take it easy, according to Johnson.

"As you approach a roundabout, you wanna yield to the traffic that's to your left, and if someone's in the roundabout or at any other interchange point at the roundabout, you wanna make sure traffic is safe," as you take the turn, Johnson demonstrated at the Oglethorpe and College Street roundabout in downtown Macon.

The most important point to keep in mind, the traffic sergeant said, is "yielding to traffic in the roundabout," which will keep you and everyone around you safe.
