MACON, Ga. — Nearly 100 wildfires are burning in parts of Quebec, Canada, just over the United States international boundary. However, smoke from those wildfires is reaching far beyond that boundary, expected to reach central Georgia by Friday morning.
On Tuesday, the state of New York was under an Air Quality Alert. Officials advised those susceptible to respiratory ailments, the very young, the elderly, and those with underlying conditions to remain indoors as much as possible for the time being.
At one point Tuesday night, online air quality tracking sites reported New York City had the worst air quality in the world.
Smoke from those wildfires continues to slide south and will arrive in northern Georgia tonight, then in central Georgia overnight Wednesday into Thursday.
A key difference from New York to Georgia is that the smoke will be high in the atmosphere as opposed to the surface. That means the health impacts will not be as bad here.
However, if an individual is sensitive to poor air quality, Thursday may not be a day to be outside.
Other impacts in central Georgia could include:
- Red-tinted sunrises and sunsets
- Red-tinted shadows at the surface
- and hazy afternoon skies.
