'The Color Purple' will be set to symphony at the Grand Opera House during orchestra performance

Theatre Macon held a sold-out production of the musical while the movie was filming in downtown Macon.

MACON, Ga. — The movie musical for Broadway hit The Color Purple comes to theaters in December. However, Maconites got up close and personal last year when the film was shot downtown.

Theatre Macon held a sold-out production of the musical while the movie was filming down the street.

Now, these two worlds are colliding once again on the Grad Opera House stage.

"It's one of those pieces that show the heaviness of the African American journey in this county, but then the triumph of it as well," actor Charles Davis said.

Davis played Mister in Theatre Macon's production. He says it's a musical he's wanted to do in Macon for some years.

Ahead of the movie release, the Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra is putting on a symphonic version of 'The Color Purple' the musical. The performance will feature the same singers and actors from Theatre Macon's production. They will perform select songs from the hit musical.

"The music lends itself to be done with an orchestra," Davis said.

Caitlyn Dillard will be playing violin in the show. She says in the past the orchestra has worked with all types of musical artists.

"I think this will be our first time working with actors," Dillard said.

Although you won't be able to see the whole play acted out on stage in the concert Davis says you will still be able to feel the emotion from the production.

The concert is on November 20 at 7:30 p.m. You can get tickets on the Grand Opera House website.
