GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A dog somehow survived two weeks after being abandoned in a closet when his owners were evicted, before he was found and rescued by Gwinnett County sheriff's deputies.

According to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, the good news is the dog is "gaining weight and doing well" after being taken to the county animal shelter.

The sheriff's office posted on Facebook that deputies "checked on a home that had been vacated approximately two weeks before and were dismayed to find an emaciated dog left abandoned in a closet."

The deputies who came across the dog were identified as C. Choi and K. Gunter.

The Facebook post said the deputies obtained a warrant on animal cruelty against the owner, Jerry Robinson, Jr.

"There’s no reason to ever leave any animal abandoned in an empty space," the sheriff's office wrote on Facebook. "Our county has an animal shelter with caring animal lovers who do their best to help every animal in their care."

"We’re glad our deputies were in the right place at the right time to rescue this dog," the sheriff's office added. "He deserves a loving family."
