'One deer may total out a vehicle': Central Georgia is entering the peak time for deer sightings roadside

Going into peak time for deer sightings near roads, drivers get tips on how to handle the situation while behind the wheel.

MACON, Ga. — Terin Smith is a State Farm agent and knows how dangerous deer can be on the road.

"One deer may take out a quarter pounder and one deer may total out a vehicle," Smith said.

Drivers should always watch out for animals near the road, but right now agent Smith said you're most likely to see deer.

"It is a popular time of the year. November is the number one month for anything to happen when it comes to deer in the United States. October is the next month and December is the third largest window for when people see accidents in the United States," Smith said.

Specifically for Central Georgia, the Georgia Department of Resources has a rut map that breaks down peak times for deer movements by county.

Ronny Turner works at Harrison's Body Shop.  He said deer show up closer to the roads during hunting season.

"The hunters being in the woods kinda throw the deer out of their game," Turner said. "They don't have their bedding time. It throws them off of their routine, so their more susceptible to get out of the woods and move to the roadside to eat."

Over his 12 years at the shop, Turner has seen the awful results of deer auto accidents.

"Young boy was in the front seat of the car. The deer jumped it was in the parking lot of Captain D’s. Jumped across the road, hit the car, tore the roof off the car, and landed in the car with the boy and kicked him several times inside the car," Turner said

Smith gave tips on how to handle these situations when you’re behind the wheel.

"I hate to say it like this but don’t swerve you’ll cause more damage just hit the deer we’ll repair your vehicle, call your state farm agent, call the police if you’re on the side of the road. Get yourself out of danger, harms way," Smith said. "Most importantly breathe take a deep breath understand it’s a vehicle and it can be replaced."
