'The doctor told us there was nothing he could do': Upson firefighters hurt in crash to head home

Trista Cheeks and Logan Gordy continue to make their recovery after being ejected from their firetruck.

UPSON COUNTY, Ga. — Trista Cheeks and Logan Gordy had to be air-lifted to an Atlanta hospital after their firetruck overturned in Upson County almost five months ago.

But today, the couple have both made tremendous progress in their recovery, according to Logan's dad Tim Gordy.

"The doctor told us there was nothing he could do," Tim said.

Tim said he was devastated to hear about his son’s condition, but Logan wasn’t done fighting.

"He’s strong but the grace of God gave it to him from the prayers…that went out through this community," Tim said.

Logan and Trista were set to walk down the aisle in October. Alan Yarbrough is their fire chief and is grateful they’re walking.

"It’s just amazing at this point to talk to them and see them walking around," Yarbrough said.

Tim remembers the relief and excitement after talking to his son for the first time after the accident.

"When he first started talking, it was amazing because you couldn’t get him to shut up. Which I told everybody I said once he starts talking, he ain’t bout to stop," Tim said jokingly.

He said Logan and Trista worked together throughout their recovery process.

"Logan had setbacks and Trista did too, but once they started balancing out, [they] started getting there," Tim said. "They were right on track with each other so."

Yarbrough knew their community was supportive of the fire department, but he was pleasantly surprised at how much support the couple received.

"I knew we were tight-knit here but the outpouring of love and support," Yarbrough said. "It was jaw-dropping. I mean we received money from all over the country for Logan and Trista."

Tim believes everyone should show their love to the people they care about because the accident shows him how life can change quickly.

"You never know," Tim said. "Just love on them. Keep them close. It can happen anytime."

Trista graduated from the Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation center in Atlanta. She is on her way home to North Carolina to be with her family.

But Logan also has good news in his future. He is scheduled to be released to his family in Upson County on Friday.
