Man turns himself in after deadly Fort Valley shooting

A post from the police department said Dereckson Clark turned himself in without incident.

FORT VALLEY, Ga. — The man Fort Valley Police were looking for after one person was shot and killed on Saturday has turned himself in.

According to a Facebook post from the Fort Valley Department of Public Safety, officers were sent to 201 Troutman Avenue about a person shot.

When officers got there, they found 57-year-old Alton Cotton shot in the upper torso, the post says.

Cotton was later pronounced dead at the Peach County Medical Center.

The police department was looking for 46-year-old Dereckson Clark. They said Clark was armed and dangerous.

A post from the police department later said he turned himself in without incident.

The GBI, the Peach County Special Response Team, and the Peach County Sheriff's Department are helping Fort Valley Police with the case.

"Detectives from the Fort Valley Police Department are in the beginning stages of this investigation. The investigation is ongoing at this time," Chief Lawrence Spurgeon said in the post.

Anyone with any information on the case can call the police department at 478-825-3383.

The Kay Center in Fort Valley posted pictures of Cotton, saying they are very sad to share the news of his passing.

The center says Cotton, pictured below, worked with the landscaping crew every day and was a member of Kay Center for several years.
