GBI investigating after an inmate dies at Dodge County jail

They say the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell just before 10 p.m. on Monday

EASTMAN, Ga. — An inmate at the Dodge County jail died Monday after being found unresponsive in his cell. Now, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations is stepping in to investigate, according to a press release from the GBI.

At around 9:50 p.m. on Monday, they say 36-year-old Ronald Shaw of Villa Rica was found by jail staff in his cell, unresponsive. The Dodge County Sheriff's Office asked the GBI roughly 30 minutes later to help investigate.

Shaw was taken to the Dodge County Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Shaw's body was then taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy, the GBI said.

The press release does not offer any information about if there is any suspicion of foul play or if the cause of death appears to be natural. We reached out to the Dodge County Coroner who could not offer any information. He instead referred 13WMAZ to the GBI.

They say the investigation into Shaw's death is ongoing. If you have any information, you are asked to call the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Eastman at 478-374-6988.

They say you can also submit anonymous tips over the phone by calling 1-800-587-TIPS, online on the GBI's website here, or on the "See Something, Send Something" mobile app, the GBI said.
