Delta flight declares emergency while landing in Atlanta due to suspected lightning strike

It happened Tuesday morning on a flight from New York to Atlanta.

ATLANTA — A Delta flight from New York to Atlanta declared an emergency Tuesday morning while landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport "out of an abundance of caution" after a suspected lightning strike.

The airline added an inspection of the plane would be needed to confirm the lightning strike. In another development on board the plane that the company said was "separate and entirely unrelated," an emergency had already been declared due to a passenger experiencing a medical situation.

Medical personnel were on hand for the flight's arrival due to that passenger's situation, Delta said.

A spokesman for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport said the incident caused "no impact to operations at ATL."
