Houston County haunted attraction scares up support for cancer patient, community project

One group shows that sometimes, the most frightening places can harbor the kindest hearts.

KATHLEEN, Ga. — In the heart of Central Georgia, a haunted attraction is proving that sometimes the scariest things can lead to the most heartwarming outcomes.

Lake Joy Trails of Terror, a nonprofit haunted house and trail in Kathleen, has been giving locals frights for 15 years. But behind the scares is a story of hope and community support.

Owner Mike Kelly started the attraction with more than just screams in mind.

"The scaring part, I just enjoyed it as a kid," Kelly said. "But the giving back and the fundraisers, that started after my sister died of cancer at 39."

Each year, Lake Joy Trails of Terror sponsors a child battling cancer. This year's beneficiary is 14-year-old Kayleigh McCormick of Kathleen, who was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year and recently underwent a bone marrow transplant.

Kayleigh's brother, Brennan McCormick, expressed gratitude for the community's support.

"I'm beyond thankful," he said. "It's just a massive blessing."

Brennan says the transplant was successful, and her body is producing healthy blood cells.

The haunt's charitable efforts don't stop there. This year, they're also raising funds for a disability-friendly playground at Lake Joy Elementary School.

This weekend, the attraction is hosting a special "Haunted Festival" called Terror Fest. The event will feature vendors, live entertainment and meet-and-greets with haunt characters.

"This is our first year doing Terror Fest," Kelly said. "I'm really not knowing what to expect. The outcome could be just overwhelming."

Lake Joy Trails of Terror has gained recognition over the years, earning titles such as "Best Things to Visit in Georgia," "Scariest Haunt of Georgia 2022" and "Fan Favorite in Georgia" last year.

The haunt is located at 428 Lake Joy Road in Kathleen. Tickets for the fundraiser are $30 at the gate or $25 online. Those who wish to support the cause without attending can still purchase tickets as a donation.
