How to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning during cold weather

Cold weather can lead people to make deadly mistakes involving carbon monoxide.

MACON, Ga. — This weekend, the jet stream will start to dip southward into our area bringing colder air with it.

Temperatures Tuesday morning will be the coldest Central Georgia has seen in a while. Most of the area will be in the mid- to upper 20s.

When the weather is cold, people can make mistakes while trying to stay warm.

Many of these mistakes involve carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide cannot be smelled, seen, or heard, so you need to take safety precautions.

It is important to not use your oven as a heat source and to keep grills outside and away from windows.

Professionals can give you advice when it comes to cleaning and inspecting chimneys. Heating systems that use natural gas also need to be checked annually by professionals.

If you use a gas or kerosene space heater, make sure to keep it in a highly ventilated area.

Even when taking all the precautions, it's important to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home to keep you and your family safe.
