My Teacher is Tops: Warner Robins Middle's Kevin Mitchell

Kevin Mitchell was nominated by one of his students for making history fun.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Houston County has more schools than any other Central Georgia county so it makes sense that they also have a lot of top teachers.

At  Warner Robins Middle School, home of the Warriors, there's a rich history of My Teacher is Tops winners! It's a school that has consistently seen its students honoring their teachers. Now, we're adding another one to the list today.

Mr. Kevin Mitchell has been teaching sixth-grade social studies at Warner Robins Middle School for the past six years. He says patience, relatability and taking things one step at a time makes his teaching experience enjoyable for his students.

Student Matthew Ramirez Gervacio says he makes things interesting and relatable. He sees Mr. Mitchell as an inspiration and told us about it in his letter.

"My name is Matthew and I attend Warner Robins Middle School. I think my second-period teacher Mr. Mitchell is the best teacher,” Gervacio said. “He always does fun things. For Hispanic Heritage Month, we got to break open a pinata. He makes note-taking super fun and overall his class is very fun. He finds fun videos for us to watch and he likes to joke around a lot.”

And his reaction was priceless.

"It's incredible,” Mitchell said. “Definitely a surprise. Sometimes as teachers, we don't realize how much of an impact that we actually do have on our students so every now and then it's great to know that it really is. We really are making that much of a difference."

But as this week's My Teacher is Tops, Mitchell says it is a reminder of the impact teaching can have.

"At the end of the day, that's what you want," Mitchell said. "You want to find purpose in what you do."
