'He is a person that, we feel, has knowledge of where they might be': Man missing since March could know escaped inmates whereabouts

Christian Williams was arrested two years ago. In March 2023, hours before he was set to stand trial, video appeared to show him being kidnapped.

MACON, Ga. — It's been a week since the four men broke out, launching a manhunt involving at least three agencies.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office told 13WMAZ that U.S. Marshals tried to question a person of interest in the case this morning and were met with gunfire.

Someone fired shots through the door at them. They stepped back and waited for the SWAT team. The person shooting at them, according to the Bibb County Sheriff's Office was 23-year-old Christian Williams.

By the time Bibb's SWAT team entered the unit, they say, Williams had shot himself.

Sheriff David Davis believes Williams is connected to the four inmates who escaped.

"He is a person that, we feel, has knowledge of where they might be, that has knowledge of the escape, and who has some connection to at least one or two of the people we're looking for," Davis said.

We've reported on Christian Williams before, he was arrested two years ago and charged with killing Gregory Watkins in a convenience store.

In January of this year, he was released on bond and ordered to wear an ankle monitor. In February, prosecutors filed a motion to revoke his bond and send him back to jail.

In March, his family sent a 16-second video to his lawyer that seems to show he was kidnapped hours before he was supposed to go to trial. The lawyer turned it over to authorities and a judge issued a warrant for Williams' arrest.

According to Macon District Attorney Anita Howard, Anytime Bail Bonding was supposed to be tracking his ankle monitor, and Sheriff Davis says Anytime Bail didn't notify them that Williams' monitor was dead.

Howard suspects it was tampered with.

However, that wasn't the first time Anytime failed to track someone out on bail.

Both Davis and district attorney Anita Howard said in March, they weren't sure if Williams' kidnapping was staged.
