Two Houston County deputies charged with bringing contraband to inmate

It all started when an anonymous letter was sent to the district attorney's office

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Two Houston County deputies have been arrested after an investigation into jail contraband.

According to a news release, it all started in January when an anonymous letter was sent to District Attorney George Hartwig’s office.

The letter was then forwarded to Maj. Alan Everidge with the Houston County Detention Center.

It alleged that an inmate at the jail was getting marijuana and off-limit personal hygiene products.

Sheriff Talton authorized an investigation into the claims and the news release says evidence led to the arrests of two detention deputies, identified as 33-year-old Laura Sheriff and 23-year-old Michael Harris.

Investigators says the pair took steps to get contraband on the outside and then smuggled it in to deliver to at least one inmate.

Both Sheriff and Harris are charged with one count of items prohibited and violation of oath by a public officer.

They are being held without bond.

The investigation is ongoing and could lead to more arrests. If you have any information, you can call Sgt. Pittard Chapman at 478-542-2085.
