Water main break in Milledgeville repaired, but certain areas under boil water advisory

The city knew about the broken water pipe Sunday around 5 p.m.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — On Sunday, we reported a water main break in Milledgeville that resulted in Baldwin County schools closing, one hospital, and a manufacturing company with low to no water pressure.

The problem started on Sunday evening. First, the city water plant system notified them of abnormal water levels, and that's when the city knew something was wrong.

"We initially knew something was going on yesterday at about 5. We heard from the hospital not long after that," Griffeth said.

The break happened on Martin Luther King Jr Drive and spilled water into the nearby creek. The three places without water were the school buildings, Atrium Health Baldwin, and a manufacturing company, Zchwimmer-Schwartz. Griffeth says this was different from the water main breaks in December, and that's why no homes lost water.

"A service line is a line that comes off the main, goes to a meter, and services a particular address, residence, or business. All of them are not water mains. Most of them that happen, people are not aware," Griffeth said.

The water main breaks people saw in Milledgeville were due to weather. Griffeth says the city dealt with about 42 water main breaks. This weekend's problems were caused by too much water pressure.

"We called in a contractor on this break today because it was in the creek, and it was necessary to use larger equipment than we had," Griffeth said.

Once the water is turned off for an extended time and then turned back on, there is a boil advisory issued. For this case, the advisory was issued for Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin, Zchimmer & Schwarz, N ABC St., and Stadium St.
