'Let's break the mold again': Macon Bacon owner puts the team up for sale

The owner of the Bacon, Steve DeLay, announced the news on LinkedIn. Here's what he is looking for in a new owner.

MACON, Ga. — After almost six years of running the Macon Bacon baseball team, the franchise owner Steve DeLay is putting the team up for sale, looking for an owner who will continue to "serve the communities they call home."

He made the announcement on LinkedIn on Monday.

The Macon Bacon is a part of the Coastal Plain League. The team is a collegiate summer baseball team, essentially offering college students the chance to play during their off months.

DeLay started the Bacon in July 2017, with the team playing at the historic Luther Williams Field in Caroyln Crayton Park.

But in his announcement, DeLay emphasized that the new owner doesn't have a team to turn around. Instead, they have a solid foundation to jump off of, he wrote.

"What they need is someone committed to continuing to deliver a superior fan experience, see staff grow and evolve and serve the communities they call home," DeLay said. "I don’t need to sell them, and this isn’t a distress auction. But I would like for them, like the dogs I rescue, to go to a home."

DeLay said he launched the team with Jon Spoelstra.

But the Macon Bacon is not the only team DeLay is putting up on the market. After the success of the Macon Bacon, he decided to start another team in 2020.

"The team is sizzling like, well, Bacon," DeLay wrote. "I enjoyed the experience so much, I wanted to take on another."

He started the Florence Flamingos out of South Carolina.

He brags that the Macon Bacon has sold out every weekend game since the team's first season.

"Macon and Florence are now successful franchises, built on solid fundamentals, great cities and staffs that are led by strong Presidents. They are poised to continue to grow," DeLay wrote. "But, it’s time to do something new, and as always I am not opposed to going outside the box to achieve the right objective."

DeLay says that he is looking for a good owner for the team.

"Feel free to message me here on LinkedIn," DeLay said. "I will be selective, as these are more than properties to me. Let's break the mold again."
