Pilot killed in small plane crash near South Florida shopping plaza

The plane was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A pilot onboard a small banner plane died after it crashed Wednesday afternoon near a shopping plaza near Fort Lauderdale, according to officials.

It happened around 12:45 p.m. at 450 N Park Road, which is less than four minutes from Memorial Regional Hospital.

The plane was fully engulfed in flames when fire rescue crews arrived at the scene, CBS Miami reported. The National Transportation Safety Board said the deceased pilot, who officials didn't immediately name, was the plane's sole occupant. No injuries were reported to anyone on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board now are tasked with determining what caused the plane crash.
