Macon County Schools plan to give every student a laptop

The district will use the money awarded from the state's Rural Resource Grant to purchase Google Chrome Books for their K-12th grade students.

MACON COUNTY, Ga. — A Macon County High School class uses laptops during their lessons, but with only 4 laptop carts across the district, Media Specialist Sarah Barfield says it's hard to use them every day.

"We do have to put restrictions on them that the same person can't have the cart every single day for a whole month or anything like that, so it does limit," Barfield said.

Superintendent Marc Maynor says letting every student use a laptop will increase achievement.

Now, money from the state's Rural Resource Grant will help them do that.

"We wrote the grant for a Chromebook in every child's hand, K-12, and that will include teachers as well," Maynor said.

The grant money was for districts that need additional financial support and are among the state's lowest performing Title 1 schools.

Instructional Coaches Niyokia Phillips and Monica Jones say technology will boost scores.

"Go into some of the urban districts you'll notice that students are carrying around iPads, they're carrying around Chromebooks," Phillips said.

"The students will be able to have instant feedback from their teachers. The teachers will be able to work more one-on-one with the students," Jones said.

"Teachers are going to be able to take all of the data and have it instantly collected for them instead of spending hours and hours trying to put data in spreadsheet," Barfield said.

Phillips says it's just the little push they need to reach their academic goals.

"Macon County is really going to the top, so I just want everybody to sit back and watch cause we're ready," Phillips said.
