Judge rejects Peach County man's lawsuit over 2016 shooting

Judge Tillman Self said Shaw failed to show that Peach County violated his rights, and he said grand juries voted to indict him twice.

PEACH COUNTY, Ga. — A federal judge Thursday threw out a lawsuit filed by a man shot in his home by a Peach County deputy.

In May 2016, Lonnie Shaw was critically wounded by a deputy who came to his door at 3 a.m.

He wants the county to pay damages including nearly half a million dollars in medical costs.

Shaw was charged with aggravated assault because Deputy Brandon Williams claimed that Shaw pointed a gun at him, but in 2019, a Peach County jury acquitted Shaw.

That happened after home video showed that the officer lied.

Last year, Judge Tillman Self rejected most of Shaw's lawsuit, but he said Shaw could sue the deputy and Sheriff Terry Deese for malicious prosecution.

Thursday, Self threw out the rest of the case.

He wrote that Shaw failed to show that Peach County violated his rights, and he said grand juries voted to indict him twice.

Shaw can appeal that ruling to a higher federal court.
