Raphael Warnock wins over Herschel Walker in Georgia Senate runoff race

He will now serve his first full term as senator after grabbing the win in his second runoff victory in the last two years.

ATLANTA — Senator Raphael Warnock will retain his seat in the U.S. Senate after staving off Republican challenger Herschel Walker in the Dec. 6 runoff election.

CBS News and the Associate Press called the race just before 10:30 p.m.

The Democrats will now hold a majority of 51 seats.

In January 2021, Warnock defeated Republican Incumbent Kelly Loeffler by more than 93,000 votes.

He will now serve his first full term as senator after grabbing the win in his second runoff victory in the last two years.

The fiercely competitive Senate runoff in Georgia had national implications as Democrats try to solidify their hold on the upper chamber of Congress.

Warnock got over 37,000 more votes than Walker in the Nov. 8 election, out of nearly 4 million votes counted. However, Warnock fell just shy of a majority, requiring Tuesday’s runoff.
