The crash happened near Old Cabiness Road and Highway 83 between an SUV and a semi-truck, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

MACON, Ga. — A man is dead and a 9-year-old was severely injured in a crash between their SUV and a semi-truck in Monroe County, according to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

They say it happened near Old Cabiness Road and Highway 83 on Sunday just before 7 p.m.

Jeffrey Mathis from Dooly County was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 9-year-old was taken to Children's Hospital in Atlanta by helicopter after the crash, the press release said.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says they were in a maroon Acura MDX when a crash happened between them and a Swift transportation tractor-trailer.

They say the truck driver was also taken to a hospital in Macon.

The sheriff's office did not say who was at fault in the crash, and they note the crash is still under investigation.
